Rest between Movements
Apr 2026
A raw moment captured within the quiet stillness of the studio, this painting lets the viewer in on the private discipline behind artistic performance. Inspiration is taken and focusses on the natural light, muted tones and suspended movements to create an atmosphere of contemplation and diligence. It is a working space with well worn shoes put aside for a respite from the ever speeding pace of life and a pause to articulate one’s craft. The elements within this piece speak to endurance, ritual and the deeply human process of becoming.

Covering one of the many stretched canvases from two weeks ago. I have the honour to paint my friend and fellow painter Michaela Alexander as the musician that she is. A woman of integrity and many giftings. Grateful for the space and time to pursue multiple projects simultaneously. Painting from life continues to present puzzles and complications but never ceases to be the most rewarding and engaging of the processes I have attempted. Next week I will be setting this one aside and embarking on the “covenant” piece.

An update on my painting of Michaela playing the violin and the beginnings of laying the setting for my covenant painting. Most likely I will be having to pivot from this idea and hope to have a new composition and finalized and approved soon. In the meantime working on the space and still life while my model is not longer in the studio
